Brit Stops

Question 1

Why would hosts allow us to stay on their property for free?

Accepted Answer

One reason is that they do not have to provide any facilities over and above a parking space.

Although spending money with our hosts isn't an obligation, we're confident you'll end up buying some exquisite local produce from a rustic farm shop, or a lovely Sunday roast at a quaint country pub! You’ve saved your campsite fees, and you always need to have dinner or stock up the fridge - so why not? We like to think of it as spending your money more enjoyably!

The only thing you might be charged for is electric hook up, so don't forget to ask if you need to use it.

Question 2

What facilities will we find at the host sites?

Accepted Answer

Many sites will have no facilities. Currently around half of our hosts have an outside tap and/or somewhere to drain grey waste water, and this is noted on their host profile. Very few have facilities for toilet waste disposal, or offer electricity (it's also likely that you'll need a standard UK 3-pin plug adaptor). Remember, your hosts are not campsites but in many cases are working farms, pubs or vineyards, and although they are keen to encourage tourists to visit their local area, they do need to continue working as normal.

The fact that motorhomes can fill up or empty waste at campsites, and charge batteries while on the move or by solar panels, means they can be invited on-site by hosts without disturbing their daily work routine.

Question 3

How far in advance should I phone ahead?

Accepted Answer

Remember, Brit Stops hosts are not camp sites, they do not have a reservations desk or booking site, and you can't book a pitch like at a camp site.

Those hosts who do require a phone call in advance are clearly stated on their host profile, and phoning ahead is just to check if a stopover is ok; this can be done on the same day or the day before.

Question 4

How many nights can I stay?

Accepted Answer

Brit Stops is a stopover scheme, so a one-night stay is the standard stopover duration. Unlike camp sites though, there is very rarely a departure time, so in most cases you can stay during the day.

Question 5

How will I know if there is space at a host location?

Accepted Answer

Some hosts do like you to phone in advance, and this is noted on their host profile. In most cases, you will not know if there is a space until you turn up, but it is unlikely that a host will not have a space. In theory, this could happen though, and on the odd occasion, a host may not be able to welcome motorhomes at short notice due to personal or work reasons, and we ask our members to respect this.

Fortunately, there is usually another host not too far away, and it's always best to have a "plan B". Sometimes you might be able to park outside until the car park empties out at closing time, then move in for the night.

Question 6

Will my vehicle fit at Hosts?

Accepted Answer

If you are under 30ft (9m) long you will be able to access most of our host sites. Any that can only accommodate small vans such as VW campervans, have this noted on their entry.

Some sites will not be able to welcome large motorhomes or caravans. This will normally be due to problems with manoeuvring large vehicles on site. If vehicles over 30ft long are welcome, you will be able to see that on their host profile.

Question 7

Can I join if I have a caravan, car, tent, or roof tent?

Accepted Answer

Brit Stops is just for self-contained motorhomes, panel van conversions, caravans, or campervans. Not all Brit Stops locations will accept caravans though, so read each Host profile closely to see if caravans are welcome.

Parking is in customer car parks, not on pitches, so manoeuvring can be an issue with other customers coming and going.

Also, most hosts will not have fresh water available to fill an Aquaroll, or anywhere to dispose of waste water from the waste caddy.

Question 8

How do I get the Brit Stops app?

Accepted Answer

Our app is free to all Britstoppers, and you can download it from either the App Store or Google Play. Login with your email and password to get started. No access code is required!

More Adventures for Less

Travelling by motorhome or caravan gets pricey fast. The cost of fuel, campsite fees, and gear for each trip prevents people from spending more time on the road. But if expensive campsite fees were one less thing you had to worry about, would you camp more often?
